Identify a thread

Not sure what thread you have?

Three measurements are usually enough. Use calipers or a ruler, and a thread gauge if you have one.

  1. 1
    Diameter

Measure across the outside of a male thread, or the inside of a female port. Measure the peaks, not the valleys.

  2. 2
    Pitch

Count thread peaks over one inch, or measure the distance between peaks in millimeters for metric.

  3. 3
    Taper

If it narrows toward the end it is NPT or BSPT. Straight threads seal with an O-ring, washer or flare.
